Top 5 Tips How To Prepare For The Storm

“Storms Confirmed to Impact Your Area”

“A Fierce Storm is Forecasted”

These headlines can cause you to panic even if you are prepared for the worst. Here are 5 tips to help you and your family get ready for storms before they arrive.

Create a “Game Plan”

It is vital to develop an emergency plan before the storm arrives. Be sure to have a meeting with your family members to discuss safety exits, where to go if you need to evacuate, what do with your pets and how to stay in contact. If you decide to stay indoors, interior rooms with no windows or bathrooms on the first floor are generally safe choices. Test the emergency plan to help your family work out any kinks prior to the storm.

Grab and Go

A grab and go emergency bag should be stocked with any required medicine, first aid supplies, toiletries, flashlights, extra phone chargers and clothes for up to four days. Also, be sure to keep a copy of your property insurance policy in your emergency bag. For more information on what should be in your grab and go emergency bag visit:

Do Your Home Work

There are easy things you can do to maintain your home in preparation for a storm. Check the condition of your roof for cracks, chips or flaws, curling or broken shingles. Be sure to clear your gutters and drains of any debris. Organize some time to carefully remove trees branches or loose limbs that are close to your home.

Insurance Reassurance

Ensure your home insurance home policy is adequate and current. Identify how to safely turn off the power, water, and gas to your home. Teach others in the home who may be able to assist before the storm arrives or if you are not home. If you have any questions about your insurance policy contact your local independent agent.

Listen Up!

Listen for alerts, news, and sirens about approaching storms.  This may require you to get tech savvy and download a weather app. Apps including Accuweather, The Weather Bug and The Weather Channel can keep you informed with real time weather alerts.
